Multiply for the voluntary and community sector
After a successful Year 1 delivery (13 organisations awarded small grants to support over 70 learners) we are happy to announce we are now accepting applications for Multiply Voluntary and Community Sector Grants year 2.
Through Multiply, we want to boost people’s confidence and ability to use maths and numbers effectively in daily life, at home and work. This includes helping people take the first steps to attaining a formal qualification to open doors to new jobs, career progression and/or further study. All adults aged 19+ who want to improve their numeracy (up to and including level 2 or equivelant) will be able to access free flexible courses and initiatives that fit around their lives.
PROJECTS
Examples include (but are not limited to):
- Projects designed to increase confidence with numbers for those needing the first steps towards gaining a qualification
- Projects designed to help people use numeracy to manage / make the most of their money
- Numeracy projects delivered with employers, including numeracy skills needed in a specific workplace
- Projects for people who lack the numeracy skills needed for work
- Intensive and flexible numeracy projects that lead to a Functional Skills Qualification
- Projects for parents wanting to increase own skills and help their children with numeracy homework
- Numeracy projects for prisoners or those recently released from prison
- Numeracy projects to those leaving or just left the care system
- Maths modules embedded into vocational projects
The Multiply grant projects are an opportunity for you to be creative, so all project ideas will be considered!
ELIGIBILITY
Organisations applying for this funding must be a TSO – voluntary, community, registered charities, social enterprises, mutual and co-operatives, and must satisfy the following criteria:
Have a delivery base within Gateshead and be already working with beneficiaries residing in Gateshead.
Have up to date policies and procedures that are relevant and adhere to the current legislative requirements for Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety and Safeguarding and Prevent.
Can confirm and evidence current cash and credit position and agree to organisation being credit checked and for the results of this check to be used in the evaluation process.

To apply, please read the eligibility criteria to ensure you are eligible and can satisfy the funding criteria. Read the specification, application guidance and scoring framework, complete the application form and send to Multiply@gateshead.gov.uk. There is no closing date for applications, we will keep the window open for as long as funding remains. We are happy to discuss your application with you; we are happy to review drafts before you submit, or when you submit, if we feel you could improve your idea or have any suggestions, we will come back to you – there is no pass or fail for this project.

As we know, adults with low numeracy skills are hard to engage. They often don’t see a problem with their numeracy and are unlikely and unwilling to get help. Many lack confidence and have had poor experiences of education. Learning and Skills will be working closely with the voluntary sector to establish need, and to support your organisation and staff to deliver a Multiply ‘maths interventions’ project with your service users. The funding must be used to support adults aged 19+, Gateshead residents, or those who work within Gateshead, who do not already hold a L2 or equivalent Maths qualification. You can apply for a grant of up to £25k, for a project to be delivered within April 2023 to March 2024 – if you are planning for your project to begin later in the year, you should still apply as soon as possible.
